A-Level Philosophy and Ethics Course Content
Philosophy and Ethics are the two options which you will be studying from the AQA Religious Studies specification. However no prior knowledge of Religious Studies is required although there is opportunity for those who have studied it at GCSE to build on prior knowledge.
For the AS Award (1061) two units will be studied, each unit is assessed in June by a 1 hour 15 minute written examination.
For the A2 Award (2061), a further two units are studied, based on the knowledge gained at AS. Each unit is assessed by a written examination of 1 hour and thirty minutes.
AS Unit A : Religion and Ethics
- Utilitarianism - How worthwhile is the persuit of happiness, and is it a reasonable basis for making moral decisions?
- Situation Ethics - Should you be able to do whatever you think is the most loving thing in any situation?
- Religious teaching on the nature and value of human life - to what extent can we influence our own destiny? Are humans more valuable than animals?
- Abortion and Euthanasia
AS Unit C ; Philosophy of Religion
- The Cosmological Argument for the existence of God - is an infinite universe possible?
- Religious Experience - challenges from philosophy, and science
- Psychology and religion - What is the relationship between religion and mental health?
- Atheism and postmodernism - is God dead?
A2 - To be arranged, likely to be Unit 3B Philosophy of Religion and 4C Ways of Moral Decusion making
